When trying to decide what carpet to choose, you need to take into consideration a few things: where is it going, traffic, budget, care/maintance & lifestyle. All these factors will help determine what type of carpet is right for you and your space. Higher pile plush may look and feel nice but does tend to need more care and maintance to keep it looking that way. Where lower pile/ patterned carpet can withstand higher traffic without showing wear patterns as quick. Another thing to consider is if you want Nylon, Polyester, or Olefin.

Nylon: most durable fiber for active lifestyles)

Polyester: Looks and feels very nice, vibrant colors and patterns, and cost effective

Olefin: Is good for stains and mositure but tends to not wear as well

All carpet is going to get worn over time but regular care and maintance is essential for any type carpet. When caring for your carpet make sure you have a good vacuum. You can never over vacuum. The BIGGEST AND MOST IMPORTANT thing to remember is that you need a vacuum that has a soft beater bar. If the bristles on the brush are hard, they will break down the fibers in your carpet and can make it look worn alot faster. Another key factor is to have it professionally cleaned every 18 months to 2 years. This will help bring the fibers back to life.
